India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Post Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to ten times the safe limit recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, representing 15-20x above acceptable standards.

Firecracker Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current city leadership approached the supreme court to seek a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Legal Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital registered contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe measurements observed during Diwali in at least three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming worsening air quality in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Multiple Pollution Factors

The problem in the city is resulting from a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the city as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Toll

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing approximately 10k early fatalities each year in Delhi.
